Embroidery Picnic: Embroider your Longing Handkerchief

PROGRAM:

The Festival Triste para Sempre and Bailha invite you to a sharing experience in the heart of Lisbon. Led by David Oliveira, this workshop proposes a creative look at sadness, validating it as a vital emotion and a generator of beauty.

This morning, we reclaim the handkerchief as an archetypal object of longing, farewell, and the solace of our tears. Historically marked by complex dynamics, oscillating between a practice of domestic submission and a silent tool of female empowerment, Madeira Embroidery is rediscovered here as a therapeutic and ritualistic act.

The gathering takes the form of a picnic in the Jardim da Estrela. Surrounded by nature, participants can slow down, chat, and embroider their own creations using traditional Madeira embroidery stitches as a base: Cord Stitch, Garatino, and Matiz.

Introduction Circle: Presentation of the festival concept and Bailha’s approach to the art of embroidery.

The Drawing: Individual exploration of references for drawing. Transfer of the drawing to the fabric.

Guided Practice: Learning the fundamental stitches and developing embroidery skills in a relaxed picnic setting.

Closing: Individual reflection on the meaning of the “longing handkerchief”. Sharing of the process and distribution of movie tickets.

Practical Information:

• Date: 11 de july
• Local: Jardim da Estrela, Lisboa (Meeting point at the bandstand)
• Price: 45 euros (materials included, selection of vegan and gluten-free snacks and drinks, and 1 ticket to a film screening of your choice from the Triste para Sempre Festival program)
• Target audience: Intended for the general public, with or without prior experience in embroidery.

The workshop will only take place if a minimum of 5 people are registered. If the minimum number is not reached two days before the event, registered participants will be contacted for a refund or exchange of the workshop fee for a voucher. The same procedure will apply if the workshop is cancelled due to unforseen reasons.

Cancellations/Refunds: The registration fee will be refunded to those who are unable to attend the workshop for any reason and who notify us of their cancellation at least 5 days prior to the event.
