Madeira Embroidery Workshop Series | October to December

Come discover the timeless art of Madeira Embroidery! We have put together a series of three immersive workshops where you can learn traditional stitches, discover the cultural context of this centuries-old art form, and create your own pieces alongside experienced embroiderers.

General information for all workshops:

• Location: Estreito Civic Centre in Câmara de Lobos.

• Time: 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

• Price: €50 per workshop.

• What is included: All technical materials needed to complete the embroidery (fabric, threads, needle, etc.), final mounting for the piece, as well as snacks and drinks to enjoy during the session.

• Experience: No prior experience is required.

• Languages: The workshops are conducted in Portuguese and English.

1. Madeira Embroidery Introductory Workshop (Eco Bag) Date: October 10, 2026

In this immersive experience, you will have the opportunity to learn about the history of this art form and discover the techniques that have shaped the island's identity over generations. Guided step by step, you will start with introductory exercises before moving on to traditional stitches such as the cord, matiz, or garanito stitch. At the end, you can use your creativity to embroider your own design on a 100% organic cotton eco bag, creating a unique piece to take home.Registration is open until October 1, subject to availability.

2. The "Vilhões" Motif on a Pocket Handkerchief Date: November 7, 2026

A session exclusively dedicated to the iconic regional "Vilhões" motif. The workshop focuses on the traditional stitches needed to bring these figurative designs to life. After the introductory exercises, you will apply your knowledge and creativity to embroider this distinctive motif on an exclusive pocket handkerchief made from 100% white cotton fabric (35x35cm), creating a memorable textile artwork. 3. Madeira Embroidery Introductory Workshop (Eco Bag) - December Edition Date: December 12, 2026

Another opportunity to take part in our introductory workshop. With the guidance of our embroiderers, you will complete practical exercises to master the cord, matiz, or garanito stitch, culminating in personalizing your own embroidered design on an organic cotton eco bag. An excellent way to create a handmade gift or to explore traditional crafts during the festive season. Limited places available.

The price includes: entry fees, all materials required for the activity, guidance from the artisan / training provider, personal accident insurance, and VAT at the current statutory rate.

If the event is canceled by the Organiser, the full amount paid will be refunded. In the event of a no-show or withdrawal/cancellation by the participant, the amount paid will not be refunded.
