Workshop description
Bailha is a contemporary embroidery brand rooted in Madeira’s cultural heritage. Through design, craftsmanship and close collaboration with local artisans, Bailha celebrates the island’s embroidery tradition, reinventing it for today.
Each piece and workshop supports fair wages, values slow craftsmanship and helps preserve an art form that has been part of Madeira’s identity for generations.
Join us for an immersive, hands-on Madeira Embroidery workshop led by David Oliveira, founder of Bailha.
During this 3-hour experience, participants will:
– Discover the history and cultural significance of Madeira embroidery
– Practice basic Madeira stitches such as corda stitch, garanito and matiz
– Sketch their own design
– Embroider a unique, personalized ecobag to take home
This workshop is suitable for beginners and enthusiasts – no previous experience is necessary. Each participant receives individualized guidance and support throughout the process.
All tools and materials are provided, including:
– 1 bag of high quality fabric (100% organic cotton)
– Madeira embroidery thread
– Needle
– Thimble
– Finger protector
Participants will leave the workshop with their finished fabric bag and a deeper understanding of Madeira’s textile heritage.

Notes:
This workshop is aimed at anyone who wants to learn embroidery techniques on an ongoing basis. The workshop is taught in Portuguese and English.
The workshop only takes place with a minimum of 5 people registered. If the minimum number is not reached three days before the event, registered participants will be contacted for a refund or exchange of the workshop fee for a shopping voucher. If the class is canceled for reasons of force majeure, the same procedure will apply.
Cancellations/refunds: The registration fee will be refunded to people who are unable to attend the seminar for any reason and who notify us of their withdrawal no later than 2 days beforehand.
